Ensuring manure disposal requires joint effort

Recently, Bart-Jan Oplaat and Ewout Klok of the Dutch Poultry Farmers’ Association (Nederlandse Vakbond Pluimveehouders ) visited BMC Moerdijk to discuss current developments and the company’s future plans. The conversation focused on the transition toward green gas production and the added value that BMC Moerdijk provides to the poultry sector.

BMC Moerdijk is working on plans to transform the existing power plant—which currently produces green electricity—into a facility that will produce, among other things, green gas. The new installation will have a processing capacity of 300,000 tons of poultry manure, which is 120,000 tons less than today. Operations are expected to begin in 2030. By producing green molecules, BMC aligns with the growing demand for alternatives to fossil gas and contributes to the decarbonization of sectors where electrification is less straightforward. The installation is expected to produce approximately 32 million cubic meters of green gas annually. In addition, liquid CO₂ and crystalline ammonium sulfate will be recovered. The digestate will still contain energy, which will be used to generate heat and electricity for the facility’s own processes. Production of poultry-manure ash will also remain part of the company’s activities: a fully hygienic phosphate–potassium fertilizer whose disposal is not dependent on the (export) market for (un)processed animal manure.

During the conversation, Bart-Jan Oplaat emphasized the significant and proven importance of BMC Moerdijk for the entire sector: “The preservation of BMC Moerdijk is fundamentally important for reliable and sustainable manure-disposal security for the entire poultry sector. Even in times of emergencies, we must be able to rely on a dependable and professional processor. The members of Coöperatie DEP, the primary supplier of BMC Moerdijk, have demonstrated for years how important collective responsibility is. But we all benefit from the presence of BMC Moerdijk. That is precisely why it would be beneficial if all Dutch poultry farmers delivered a portion of their manure to BMC Moerdijk, thereby safeguarding manure-disposal security for themselves as well.”
