The first negotiations between poultry farmers and energy producers took place back in 1987. Today´s poultry farmers need a permanent destination for the manure they produce, while the energy sector is looking for new ways to generate energy and reduce CO2 . More than 600 poultry farmers joined forces in the DEP Cooperative in 2006. They agreed to guarantee poultry litter delivery for ten years, thereby giving the green light to build this unique power plant.

BMC Moerdijk was officially opened in 2008. This sensational power plant is the tangible result of successful collaboration between energy producer PZEM Energy, the agriculture and horticulture sector (ZLTO), and poultry farmers united in the DEP Cooperative.
